UPDATE:
We have recently corresponded with both Dylan and Natasha, the two guests who videoed the recent conditions at Windrift Kennels in Moonstone, Ontario. Throughout our discussion with them, we were able to find out further details about the conditions of the kennel as well as the day to day operations.
We have also corresponded with one of the tour operators selling dog sled tours on behalf of Windrift to learn more about their recent decision to pull their dog sledding programs. This tour company was allegedly subject to multiple death threats by activists among other illegal tactics. We have no doubt the owners of Windrift Kennels are also being subject to the same type of behaviour. We encourage anyone who is being threatened in this manner to report it to the authorities as this type of behaviour is against the law. In an already difficult situation, this type of conduct is counterproductive in supporting these sled dogs.
Many people rejoiced when one of the tour operators pulled their dog sledding program with Windrift. We of course understand this however, it’s important to consider that now, a source of income has been removed from these sled dogs which may further compromise their care.
It’s difficult to know for sure what will transpire since the sled dog sport is still not regulated. The CCSFD is waiting to hear back from OSPCA as their investigation is, from what we understand, still ongoing. Since the CCFSD is not a rescue agency and cannot intervene in any decisions made by the OSPCA, we encourage ethical mushers who are able to assist to reach out to the Windrift operation and let them know you can help place some of their dogs if needed.
